5 Fun Activities For Grandkid Visits

Here are some fun activities to do with your grandchildren when they come to visit!

Read a chapter book: Turn each visit into a cliffhanger! See if you can gather some books from your childhood and read them a chapter or two each time they visit. Reading books aloud is a great activity you can both look forward to!
Gather old family pictures: Kids of all ages get a kick of seeing their parents and grandparents in photos growing up; what you looked like, clothes, styles, etc. This is also a great opportunity to share about your life and tell stories and see how things have changed!
Host a talent show: What kid doesn’t love showing off their latest skill to their family? Cartwheels, singing a song or telling a joke, this is a good time to laugh together, grow that bond and get to know your grandchild better!
Play a card game: Pick any game, new or old, and teach those kids (or have them teach you a new one!) one of the best ways to pass time and have fun!
Create a scavenger hunt: There are many ways to carry this out but we love the idea of using your house and yard! Put clues all over the house, areas, rooms and outside patios, gardens, yard and at each location, there is some kind of prize (candy, money) and the next clue! Who doesn’t love a good treasure hunt!?

There are many more activities to do with your loved ones, and we’d love to hear about them! We hope you treasure this time with your younger generations and teach them about the life they have ahead of them.
Grandkids are welcome (and even encouraged) at Imperial Club as our residents love being around youth and younger generations. We often have visitors at Imperial Club and encourage you to come take a tour of our property that many call home! You can contact us at 305-935-1801 or visit our website www.imperial-living.com

Positive Aging: 4 Ways to Stay Optimistic

With more than 70,000 Centenarians in the US alone, it’s obvious many of our elders are making the most of their lives, no matter their age. But how? And even if you’re just over 80, or under 80, wherever you’re at in life, there are ways to stay positive and see the glass half-full.

There is this movement that many of you may not know about called ‘Positive Psychology,’ which hones in on the idea that how we think about our day-to-day living shapes what it means to be happy. Asking questions like: What makes life worthwhile in our later years despite physical or mental challenges? With specific actions and habits that we can learn, the process of aging can become more positive:

With your resources, it is helpful to be selective, optimize and compensate. This means as you are adapting to the aging process, limiting your options or life choices in order to optimize your functioning level as your faculties decline. So basically, practice the behaviors you want to remain intact (exercise, playing an instrument, leading a group, etc.) and figure out what type of support or modified techniques you need to carry out to continue doing the activity.

Understand what your life goals are at this point and make your decisions based on those ideals. To lead this sort of fulfilling and satisfying life as you age, it’s important to understand your place in the world and then choosing to make your contribution no matter how small. It’s also important to know how to help others and receive help in return and knowing how to approach your stage of life with an ongoing desire to learn new things and have new experiences.

Cultivating flexibility involves lifelong strategies of thinking and feeling in ways that counteractive most patterns. Practice gratitude, forgiveness and honesty.

It’s a mindset. It is disciplining yourself to reframe perceptions and cultivating those positive emotions as you cope with whatever dilemmas come with old age. Neuroscience studies suggest that happiness is activated in older persons as they practice positive and aging skills.

We want to encourage you to discover how you can be happy as the years pass, because it IS possible!

Resident Spotlight: Seymour Cook

Seymour Cook was born in New York City, on December 10, 1923. He attended James Madison high school in Brooklyn, where he played sports such as, baseball and football. When the attack on Pearl Harbor happened in 1941, Seymour was 18 and attending Brooklyn College.
He quit college and applied to the War Department, since they were searching for students majoring in physics and mathematics. He was sent to Pittsburgh, for an accelerated course in electronics and shortly afterwards, to Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, for another accelerated course in engineering and communications. He worked until the end of 1942 , when he resigned from the War Department and enlisted in the United States Army. He spent the next three years in the South Pacific. After the war, Seymour met a beautiful young women, Annette, who later became his wife. They had three children, Bob, Mindy and Alan. During the 70s, Seymour accepted a position as consultant for the World Trade Center in New York during it’s construction period. He was involved in the design of the communications system for the Trade Center. Seymour was offered another position as the Director of Telecommunications at the University of Massachusetts, based at the medical center in Worcester. In his own words he said ”it would be foolish for me to attempt to describe the rate of advances in electronic technology that occurred in the time frame described herein.” That era of rapid changes in technology, was a transition for a new way to compete worldwide. Prior to Seymour’s retirement, he accepted a position as Vice President of Engineering and System Design with a rm that became the largest Florida based long distance telephone company in the state. We welcome you dear Sy and we are so happy to have you as a part of our Imperial Club family!
