Resident Spotlight Julia Nemeroff

Julia Nemeroff was born in Cuba on October 30, 1926, the daughter of Aron and Elisa Pfeferberg. Her parents were Polish and wanted to live in the USA however, in those days the visas that were granted for immigrants were unavailable, so instead of waiting, they made the decision to live in Cuba. She had two brothers, one who died at the age of eight years old and a sister who is alive and well at eighty years old. One year while growing up in Cuba, her mother sent Julia and her sister to Miami for a brief vacation, and that’s where she met her future husband, Alex Nemeroff (Hal). Hal lived in the same hotel where she was staying and had a business renting beach chairs. Ironically, Alex did not speak Spanish and Julia did not speak English, but both were able to communicate effectively in Yiddish. For three years, they wrote letters and visited each other until they decided to get married in Miami. Julia’s parents had arranged a beautiful apartment in Havana and they young couple moved to Cuba to begin their life together. Doing business at that time became very complicated in Cuba, so the Nemeroff family returned to Miami where they established themselves. They had two beautiful children and made it their goal to provide a full education for both daughters that became a reality. Julia became a buying agent for the tourists who came to Miami and started the business slowly by including her Colombian friends who were extremely happy with the treatment they received. Her friends quickly referred others to take advantage of the great opportunities that Julia offered, and the rest is history!
