June Resident Spotlight: Joanne Alterman

Joanne Alterman was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Abraham and Sophia Reisman. She was one of two children, but unfortunately her sister, Doris, passed away at the young age of 63.

Joanne is an accomplished fashion designer. Several famous people, including Mrs. Henry Ford and Princess Aignatelli of Italy, requested her services. Joanne traveled between Florida and New York City where her designs were sold at Henry Bendel, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. She was attending the University of Miami “School of Design” when she met the love of her life, Seymour Alterman. The two met at Junior’s Restaurant on Miami Beach and were married three months later in Atlanta, Georgia on July 26, 1953.

They bought a lovely home on Miami Beach where they raised their three children. During their marriage, they traveled all over the world. Seymour was an accomplished Endocrinologist and was asked lecture during their travels across Europe, Asia, and South America. They had 57 wonderful years together. Their daughter Karen is a lawyer; Cindy is an insurance specialist; their son Jim is a psychologist. They also have six grandchildren, Sophia, Toby, Zachary, Melanie, Samantha, and Steven.

Seymour passed away at the age of 87 and Joanne is living at the Imperial Club, enjoying every day with different activities and spending time with family and friends. She also has some favorite hobbies that keep her busy.

Joanne’s fashions are now on exhibit at the Jewish Museum on Miami Beach. We are so happy to have such an accomplished lady with us at Imperial Club.
