Hilda Arnaldo was born September 22,1924 in Havana, Cuba to parents Manuel Arnaldo and Filomena Gancedo. Hilda was educated elementary through high school in Havana, then continued into higher education at the University of Havana, where she majored in education and eventually received her Doctorate degree. Post-university, Hilda taught school at the Centro Asturiano school for girls for 15 years, prior to Castro’s Regime coming to power in 1959. Castro divided up the teachers and moved them to other schools, sometimes far away from where they lived. Hilda quit her job at the new school as she was forced to teach her students things she did not believe herself.
For vacations, Hilda loved to travel. She has been on many cruises throughout her life to some of the most beautiful places around the world, including Alaska and many different countries throughout Europe and South America.
After quitting her job in Havana, Hilda moved to Madrid, Spain, where her family line originated. She began working as a teacher for the children of her family’s friends. After a time living in Spain, she decided to move to New York City to join one of her sisters who worked at the B. Altman Department Store. While living in New York, Hilda began a bilingual program within the Manhattan school system and continued to work there until her retirement. The New York City school system gave her a truly grand retirement party in a beautiful restaurant as her send-off.
Post-retirement, both Hilda and her sister decided to move to Miami. She bought an apartment in Bay Harbor Islands and lived there for a few years, until moving to Imperial Club in November of 2015. Hilda says she is very happy at Imperial Club and she has many friends. You are sure to see Hilda sitting around and chatting in the Plaza surrounded by friends. We are so glad to have such a wonderful lady in our Imperial Club Family!
